Groundwater is essential to provide drinking water and water to all sectors of the economy and is also important for sustaining streams, lakes, wetlands, and ecosystems in many countries. Despite this importance, groundwater resources are in many cases exploited without sufficient knowledge about the resource with often important consequences regarding their sustainability. Moreover, forty per cent of the world population live in transboundary basins, but agreements still lack in many parts of the world. The activities of this workplan will contribute to address these challenges, by advancing water science to improve groundwater sustainability and water cooperation
