Water is becoming increasingly scarce in Sahelian countries, which often already suffer from a structural shortage of water infrastructure. In some regions, this lack of access to water has been exacerbated by conflict or insecurity. Addressing water management, including water-related disasters, is further complicated due to transboundary elements, which demands cross-national solutions. Major climate related risks to water supply faced by the Sahel are droughts, floods and erosion. UNESCO's IHP activities are meant to help address some of these water-related challenges and would be utilized to address them.
