Water security, in terms of both quantity and quality, is a pressing issue in East Asian countries. Rapid economic growth in this sub-region has come at considerable environmental cost, including the depletion and pollution of already scarce surface and groundwater resources. Through new and established partnerships - and building on achievements UNESCO category-2 centres - Beijing Office will provide policy advice; develop and support training and capacity development for water managers and professionals in Ecohydrology, IWRM and Education towards greater public awareness, understanding and appreciation of water security issues.
