Balochistan Province of Pakistan is in dry and arid eco-region. Karez irrigation system is a masterpiece of engineering and centuries old system adopted by communities in this region. This community owned and driven system used to provide free of cost water for drinking, agriculture, animals, and travelers. With the advent of tube-well technology and demand to address the needs of growing population, this system continued to shrink. To revive this system, it was realized to nominate Karezes of Balochistan as UNESCO World Heritage. For this purpose, there is a need to develop governance framework for legal protection of Karez Cultural Landscape of Balochistan. This governance mechanism will help to safeguard the existing karezes and excite other communities to revive their karezes.
