Building upon the universally known achievement of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements and the associated International Year, the UNESCO-Russia Mendeleev International Prize in the Basic Sciences was establisehd by UNESCO's Executive Board at its 207th session, with a view to foster scientific progress, science popularization and international cooperation in the basic sciences. It will give recognition to achievements that are conducive to socio-economic transformation and development on a regional or global scale. Awarded annually to two individual award-winners, it consists of a monetary reward of US $250,000 for each of the two winners. A gold medal and a diploma will also be given.
