This prize, sponsored by the National Autonomous University of Mexico (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, UNAM) was approved by the Executive Board of UNESCO at its 195th session, on 27 October 2014. The Prize, which consists of a monetary reward of US $50,000, would be awarded every two years with a view to rewarding the efforts of a person, group of people or international institution that have contributed to the development of knowledge and society through art, teaching and research in social sciences and humanities.
