Project ID 537URT4000

The Stone Town of Zanzibar was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2000 as an outstanding example of a Swahili trading town. The town retains a coherent urban fabric and contains many fine buildings reflecting its particular culture. However, the only remaining theatre, the Majestic Cinema, is no longer in use because of its very poor physical condition. By rehabilitating this building and developing the Majestic Cinema theatre, it will become a hub for culture and creativity as well as a place of inclusiveness and dialogue. In this way, the project will contribute to the enhancement of social and economic development, thereby improving the quality of life in the Stone Town of Zanzibar.
