Despite Pacific SIDS showing increasing interest in seeking international recognition for their biosphere reserves, there are only three approved SIDS sites in the Pacific MaB Network. While they need on-going support, there are other potential BR sites in the region that require special assistance to successfully apply as UNESCO MaB, Geoparks, etc. The recent impact of COVID-19 in the tourism sector has revealed a need to revive and bolster ecotourism in the region through collaboration with stakeholders like the Pacific Tourism Organization (SPTO) and the Pacific Community (SPTO). Activities will be supported in the above areas particularly to build future sustainability of existing MaB sites, encourage applications from potential BRs, and promote ecotourism in the SIDS region.
