The importance of STEM and STEM education cannot be overstated. It is the engine for sustainable development and can meet the challenges that the world is facing. At the same time, the steady decline of enrollment of young people in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) has become a matter of global concern. UNESCO's efforts to assist Member States in meeting these challenges will focus on | the development of innovative modalities for teaching and learning while remaining country specific. Improving public understanding of the role and importance of STEM to development will also be targeted with a view to ensuring inclusive participation of all spheres of society in supporting scientific endeavour and in promoting careers in science
